AFM Local 571 Workshop Training - Digitizing the Landscape

Hello!

The Atlantic Federation of Musicians, AFM Local 571, applied for and received funding from the Canadian Performing Arts Resilience Fund (CPARF), Arts Branch, Department of Canadian National Heritage through the Government of Canada and the American Federation of Musicians.

The funding we received will be used to host an education program, Digitizing the Music Landscape: Transitioning to Live Digital Performances. The program will consist of eight (8) individual workshops held from February 17 to March 20, 2023 at the Music Room in Halifax located on 6181 Lady Hammond Road.

The goal of this workshop is to teach freelance musicians, aged 40 and above, how to put a digital livestreamed performance together, start to finish, including how to post it on social media from your own location.

We would like to invite members from all music organization to participate. There is an application form attached which includes participant eligibility and additional information about this program. Each workshop will have up to twelve (12) participants. We have attached an application form for you to complete. Please check off the preferred date that you would like to attend a workshop. Due to scheduling challenges, we may be unable to put you in your requested date slot and suggest you also complete the alternate date section provided on the form. Please note that you are participating in one workshop only.

Part 1- Getting Started in the Classroom.
Our instructor, Andrew Coll of the Music Room will be working alongside his team to begin with a theory session breaking down the components of putting together a live streamed performance on various budgets.

Topics will include:

  • Lighting Requirements - What type of lighting do I need to use for my livestreamed performance?
  • Software requirements - what software do I need?
  • Sound requirements - what are the audio requirements?
  • Video requirements - what type of camera do I need?
  • Putting it all together - Help set up mics, lighting and video to produce a livestreamed performance
  • You will participate in putting together a livestream performance in a solo or group setting (you will need to bring your instrument(s))

Part 2- Practical Application Through Peer Mentoring
After the theory class, participants will be put in a breakout session with up to three groups of four musicians. Each group will take the theory learned from Part 1 to ‘bring it all together’ by rotating through these three basic production stations: Set up (instruments/physical layout); audio and video. After the practical learning station portion is completed, each group will perform a recorded live stream.

Workshops will be held in Halifax at the Music Room, located on 6181 Lady Hammond Road from 9:30am until 4:30pm. A travel/food stipend of $95 will be provided to each participant.

Please contact me if you have any questions about this workshop. Look forward to seeing you!

Thanks,
Varun Vyas - Secretary-Treasurer, AFM Local 571
